Restaurante Nova Luanda
About This Spot
Stepping into Restaurante Nova Luanda on Av. de Rodrigues de Freitas feels like crossing the threshold into a cherished family kitchen tucked away in the heart of Porto. The pace here gently slows down, inviting you to settle in among familiar faces and the soft murmur of friendly conversation. It’s a space where the warmth of hospitality wraps around you effortlessly, and the hum of everyday life outside fades into a quiet, comforting backdrop.
This cozy local eatery carries an air of unpretentious simplicity, yet every detail reflects genuine care — from the modest wooden tables to the delicate balance of aromas wafting from the kitchen. The lively yet intimate atmosphere feels more like sharing a meal at a Portuguese friend’s home than dining out, where stories are exchanged and moments linger over plates of soul-soothing food.
Here, flavors unfold slowly and with quiet confidence. The dishes feel like whispers of tradition, inviting you into a culinary conversation that is as much about texture and memory as it is taste. Whether savoring the tender embrace of octopus risotto or the heartiness of pork liver caramelized with onions, each bite carries a tale of home, carefully prepared and served without fuss.
What makes the experience truly special is the way the hosts — part storyteller, part caretaker — enhance the feeling of belonging. Their attentive yet unhurried presence ensures every guest feels seen and welcomed. You might find yourself lingering over a glass of house wine, swapping stories or absorbing local culture shared over simple yet deeply satisfying fare.
For those who visit, Restaurante Nova Luanda is less a stop on a tourist trail and more a discovery — a pause to enjoy authentic flavors in the embrace of genuine kindness and quiet joy.

Absolutely you must stop here if you’re hungry looking for authentic home style food, at possibly best price we have seen in portugal! Soup + beer + plate of fish and rice + coffee was only 6 euros! staff are very friendly and attentive, it feels like eating at home with friends and family, the staff were accommodating in being fluent in both English and Portuguese, and making us comfortable practicing our Portuguese with a lot of patience as it’s still a new language to us!

I wish to thank each person at Nova Luanda for amazing food and even more amazing atmosphere. The place is really quiet, but the owner makes it feel like home even if you're uncomfy or awkward at first. We visited the restaurant each day of our stay for lunch and there was no thing I was not happy with. It's like coming to a home of your Portuguese friend and being welcomed by his mum, who cooked lunch and invites you to eat with them. The best experience in Porto I had in terms of food.

The food was excellent! We had soup, bacalao coquette, pimiento rice, beef stew and all was above excellent! The bread is awesome as well as the house wine. Patricia and Diago best host! Small place family owned, full with locals and best prices. Basically a Portuguese homemade food experience! Deserves a Michelin star!

We had the absolute BEST experience at Restaurante Nova Luanda. We came as strangers and left as friends. Not only did we enjoy a delicious and well priced meal, we were lucky enough to engage in wonderful conversation where we learned a lot about Portugal’s culture, wine, and everything in between with Thiago. It’s a wonderful family run place. What a treat!

The place was very nice! Food was tasty! They heared exactly what we want and went a bit out of meny so points for that! If you are in Porto and want authentic food you should come! The girl that served us was so nice and communicative! It is also a family owned business so you know they care for everything!
